Carbon footprint

Understanding our impact to act better and more

Aware that textile overproduction is part of the ecological problem, we're not standing still. In addition to the ethical and environmental commitments that have been our daily life since JULES & JENN was founded in 2016, how can we further our approach to producing less, but better?

To guide us, in 2021 we carried out a Carbon Audit (Bilan Carbone® with the ADEME method) which allowed us to assess the carbon footprint of our activities over an entire year.

Greenhouse gas emissions, which are strongly linked to human activity, have a direct impact on rising temperatures, or global warming. Of the six main gases involved, the most widespread is carbon dioxide: the famous CO2. This is why all gases included in the balance sheet are converted into "carbon equivalent" and the final result is expressed in "tons of CO2 equivalent".

To measure our emissions, we collaborated with an independent third-party expert: the GoodPlanet Foundation based in Paris, recognized as a public utility since 2009 and founded by environmental activist Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

What methodology for our Carbon Audit?

The GoodPlanet Foundation uses the Bilan Carbone® methodology developed by ADEME, the French Agency for Ecological Transition, as well as the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors from ADEME's Carbon Base. This methodology, compatible with international standards and norms (GHG Protocol, ISO), is the most widely used in France.

The Bilan Carbone® methodology identifies 3 categories of GHG emissions (scopes): direct (Scope 1) and indirect emissions linked to energy (Scope 2), and all other indirect emissions (Scope 3) which include emissions linked to the purchase of goods and services, business travel by employees, supplier and customer deliveries, etc.

In France, the regulatory obligation to carry out a GHG assessment every 4 years, which concerns companies with more than 500 employees, recommends integrating all or part of scope 3 into the study scope. However, many of them do not include or partially include this scope 3 because they consider that it is not part of “their emissions” (or do not feel responsible). However, it often represents the majority of a structure's emissions, or even up to 80%-98%, depending on the sector of activity! In our opinion, not taking it into account is a lack of transparency and a very incomplete view of your company's carbon footprint.

For our part, we have counted everything that has a “carbon cost”, directly but also and above all indirectly…

The results, in full transparency

As always, we'll tell you everything... After several months of data collection, here are the main conclusions, which we are delighted to finally be able to share with you!

In 2020, JULES & JENN's carbon emissions amounted to 1,093 tonnes of CO2,
which corresponds to 1 round trip Paris/New York of a plane with 379 passengers, or the equivalent of a full plane! Not so high if we take into account that our company has more than 200 references and employs more than 55 people in full-time equivalent throughout the year.

Also, out of these 1093 tonnes of CO2e, our good practices, such as upcycling, recycling, the use of organic cotton for our bags, and above all the sustainability of our products have made it possible to avoid emissions of 491 tonnes of CO2e, or nearly 45% of the overall carbon footprint!

In conclusion...

This mapping of our carbon footprint has allowed us to make the appropriate decisions to reduce it, year after year.

Indeed, this Carbon Audit has confirmed to us: we will continue to use leather, the ultimate sustainable material, and to adopt an ever more "circular" approach upstream of product development.

At the same time, we will continue to raise awareness among our team about simple actions to adopt on a daily basis, raise awareness among our customers about key environmental issues, and we will always favour suppliers engaged in CSR actions.
