How to remove bad smells from slippers and charentaises?

traditional blue charentaises Jules & Jenn

Charentaise slippers, synonymous with comfort and well-being, can sometimes be prone to unpleasant odors. These unpleasant odors are often linked to perspiration, humidity, or the proliferation of bacteria. Fortunately, there are ways to combat shoe odors to restore fresh, comfortable slippers.

Why do slippers sometimes smell bad?

Who hasn't experienced the embarrassing experience of taking off their slippers in public and being overcome by an unflattering odor? This phenomenon, as unpleasant as it may be, is explained by a completely natural biological process. Our feet create a moist and warm environment inside our shoes. This humidity creates an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria, which are responsible for unpleasant odors. And while the materials used to make our slippers play an important role, it's our lifestyle that influences the quantity and nature of bacteria.

How to remove bad odors from your slippers?

1. The importance of airing your slippers

To keep your slippers fresh, airing them is essential. After each use, let them air dry at room temperature, away from any direct heat source that could damage the felt. Additionally, alternating pairs, between our traditional white and red slippers and our traditional black and white slippers, allows each pair to rest and dry completely, thus limiting the proliferation of bacteria responsible for unpleasant odors.

2. The virtues of natural products

Natural remedies for slipper odors are valuable allies for eliminating unpleasant odors from your slippers. Deodorize your slippers with baking soda, a real odor sponge, absorbs moisture and neutralizes unpleasant odors. White vinegar, meanwhile, has disinfectant properties that eliminate bacteria. Finally, used tea bags, especially black tea, absorb odors and leave a light, pleasant scent.

3. The power of essential oils

Tea tree, lavender, and lemon essential oils are known for their antibacterial and disinfectant properties. A few drops placed on a cotton ball and applied to the inside of your slippers are enough to neutralize unpleasant odors and leave a fresh, delicate scent.

4. Washing slippers: a last resort solution

If natural methods aren't enough, you can consider washing your slippers. Always check the care label or the brand's website before washing. To hand wash, use mild soap and cold water. Gently rub the dirtiest areas and rinse thoroughly. Then let them air dry. JULES & JENN slippers can also be machine washed at 30°C without spinning.

Prevent bad smells from slippers

In addition to regular foot hygiene, it is recommended to:

  • Choose natural materials: choose slippers made from natural wool felt, a breathable material that limits perspiration.
  • Wear cotton socks: Cotton socks absorb moisture and limit foot perspiration.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid odors in your slippers and enjoy your slippers for longer!
