You enjoy fish for its delicious taste and well-known nutritional benefits, but did you know that its skin, instead of being thrown away, can be used for another purpose? Fish skin can be used for leather goods. And yet, it doesn't seem like a sure thing.
In France, along the Atlantic coast, artisans have taken up the challenge. The fish then leaves its breeding site and is sent to our Breton tanner, a specialist in fish tanning.
The fish skin received by the tanner is first cleaned, then it is soaked in tanning baths to be transformed into leather. It is then ready for use by a leather goods designer, such as JULES & JENN . Freed from the scales, fish leather is a pleasant and durable material. Its luxurious natural pattern is available in a wide range of colors for small leather goods.
A short history of leather goods
Though little known, the transformation of fish skin is not new: it dates back to the 16th century. At that time, Jean-Claude Galluchat, leatherworker to King Louis XV, was the first to work with ray skin. But it is only over the years that tanning specialists have developed an exceptional manufacturing process that combines beauty, refinement, and durability.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, another advantage is its 100% eco-friendly nature, as fish skin is destined for disposal, being a by-product of the meat used for food. Nothing is wasted, everything is transformed. A truly responsible fashion approach.
