Sandals: quite a story!

The sandal & its history

Women's sandals are open shoes, with or without heels, with or without straps, whose defining characteristic is that they reveal the bare feet. They are available in all kinds of materials, from canvas to rope and even plastic! They date back to time immemorial. They were already worn by the vestal virgins of Ancient Rome.

Originally, it was a sole attached to the foot to which a heel was added. Sandals won the hearts of women in the 1970s, when the hippie movement adopted these shoes as symbols of a return to nature. Today, they are worn as much in the city as at the beach.

Women's sandals: a closer look at their manufacture

The first step in crafting our women's sandal designs is for the pattern maker to create the pattern for the various leather pieces that will make up the sandal. Using dies, the cutter then cuts out the different parts of the design from the chosen material, either manually or with a press. The pieces must be cut carefully to avoid any natural imperfections in the leather.

If using plongé leather, each piece is individually dyed to ensure a uniform color across its edges. The pieces are then individually hand-patinated. Then, regardless of the material used, all the upper components are mounted on a last, which varies according to shoe size, to be attached to the insole, which also serves as the footbed. The pieces are glued and secured before being dried. Finally, the leather outsole is glued on and sanded for a perfect finish. After a final drying period, the shoe's upper is assembled. The last is then removed from the sandal. Finally, the leather sandal is carefully finished to achieve an impeccable look. Wrapped in tissue paper, the shoe is gently placed in its JULES & JENN box. All that's left is to slip your feet in…
